Description
What is Music Performance Analysis?
The practice of being able to decode the sounds we hear is called analysis. The tools of analysis enable us to study or examine music in detail, in order to understand, explain and interpret it. Essentially, we’re listening to music for what sets it apart. We’re identifying aspects, elements and approaches we can use to elevate our own performances and become better musicians.
Who is Decoding Sound for?
It’s designed to support music performance analysis happening anywhere in the older student context: middle or upper – senior secondary/high school, university or adult students. No matter where you’re teaching and learning music, analysing for performing, exploring and responding is a key component of studying music. It involves lots of listening, identifying, describing and comparing across genres, elements, devices & interpretations.
What does Decoding Sound include?
We discuss all concepts, then define and apply them in context, with detailed examples and fully-written sample answers. Decoding Sound offers overviews of the elements of music, character/mood, question answering techniques and how to compare works. Plus there’s an extensive word list for describing what you’re listening to. Everything is interactive – that means embedded audio links for easy listening and the ability for students to write directly into their print/PDF copies. It’s your accessible & affordable answer to analysis!
