Conducting is something we often find in ensemble settings such as choirs, orchestras, bands and the like.
It’s a way to communicate pulse, tempo and expressive intent through gesture.
However, from a Kodály-inspired place, it’s an ideal way to practice and really know concepts like beat, metre and rhythm.

To give you a bit of a starting point in terms of practicing conducting patterns, here are 10 videos that combine teaching, learning and the application of all that—theory into practice.

Start with the basics.
Try beginning with the concept of conducting –
including the basic 2-4 or 2 metre/meter pattern, before
moving on to the 3-4 and 4-4 conducting patterns.
Practice conducting rhythms in Simple Time.
Now we take what we’ve learned and apply it in context for simple time.
Practice conducting rhythms in Compound Time.
Now that we’ve got a few videos under our belt,
it’s time to expand–including conducting in compound time.
Remember, we use the 2 pattern for 6-8, 3 pattern for 9-8 and 4 pattern for 12-8.
