Top 10 Videos for Conducting

Conducting is something we often find in ensemble settings such as choirs, orchestras, bands and the like.

It’s a way to communicate pulse, tempo and expressive intent through gesture.

However, from a Kodály-inspired place, it’s an ideal way to practice and really know concepts like beat, metre and rhythm.

You can unpack a little more in depth about conducting here.

To give you a bit of a starting point in terms of practicing conducting patterns, here are 10 videos that combine teaching, learning and the application of all that—theory into practice.

Try beginning with the concept of conducting –
including the basic 2-4 or 2 metre/meter pattern, before
moving on to the 3-4 and 4-4 conducting patterns.

Now we take what we’ve learned and apply it in context for simple time.

Now that we’ve got a few videos under our belt,
it’s time to expand–including conducting in compound time.

Remember, we use the 2 pattern for 6-8, 3 pattern for 9-8 and 4 pattern for 12-8.

If these ten videos aren’t quite enough to cover your needs,
remember there’s a bunch more available for free, so carve out some time to
deep-dive on the DSMusic Vimeo & YouTube channels!
