Speaking Music Level 1: Listening Question 3

This resource aligns with Lesson 3, Listening Worksheet 1 from Speaking Music: Musicianship & Aural Training Level One 3rd Edition (SPKM1).

In the next thirteen sections, we hear different variations of Purcell’s theme, played by a variety of instruments.

A variation is a version of the original theme, but with changes. Sometimes it sounds very similar to the theme, while other times it’s transformed so much as to be unrecognisable.

Listen to the next thirteen variations of the theme from Britten’s the ‘Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’.

Complete the table in LQ.3 (pg. 96 of SPKM1) identifying the main instrument (or family) heard in each excerpt and circling the relevant tone colour words.
