Deb’s Approach to Lesson Planning
These Master Lesson Plans are created with long term understanding in mind – allowing our students to really KNOW the concepts and elements taught and introduced by following a Kodály-Inspired teaching process of Prepare, Present and Practice.
This means that in any lesson it is most likely that students are doing all three – Preparing new concepts, Presenting those that were previously prepared and Practicing any that have been presented earlier. These have been identified within all of Deb’s lesson plans as follows:
- Lesson Essentials: These activities are a required part of an SPKM1 lesson. They include key Preparation and Present steps that must be completed within THAT lesson, before students can begin any written tasks along with the exercises, questions and activities in SPKM1. (Note, not ALL exercises etc need be completed as a Lesson Essential but generally speaking, the more the merrier!)
- Future Lesson Essentials: These activities are a required part of upcoming SPKM1 lessons. They focus on Preparation steps that build the foundation for strategies essential for future learning in upcoming lessons.
- Additional Lesson Activities: These activities, which include learning song material (although in a perfect world that would be a Future Lesson Essential), have been selected to reinforce and Practice the learning from the Lesson Essentials above, deepen students’ understanding of the concepts, create an engaging and enjoyable lesson experience, and lay the groundwork for future learning. As such, these activities are ideal for extending or rounding out a lesson, providing meaningful learning opportunities while making effective use of available time.
