On this page you will find free, fully interactive and self-contained lessons for lower secondary students. Teaching everything from beat, rhythm, crotchets, quavers, and crotchet rests, rhythmic writing and sightreading, instant rhythmic dictation (clever echo) and how to do rhythmic dictations to scales, modes and chord progressions (click here for the harder stuff). These lessons teach the music language and literacy in a rich, sequential, developmental and engaging way, using music education tools such as movable do solfa, rhythm (time) names and many other innovative techniques.
Each PDF comes complete with embedded links to teaching and practicing videos, audio files of all examples and transcription exercises PLUS the answers on a separate PDF.
How to use:
- Share the “Link to Lesson …” for your chosen lesson with your students and ask them to download/save the PDF onto their computer – the links will work best this way.
- Set them to work through the activities by clicking on the icons (taking them to relevant videos and audio files etc). For example, there are five activities in this first lesson – all of which could be set as an individual activity or all five could be set as a full lesson.
- If they do not own a Level 1, Musicianship & Aural Training for the Secondary School Student Book, students will need to print out the worksheets or, alternatively, they can copy the exercises to be completed onto a blank piece of paper.
- Once they have completed each or all of the activities, ask them to complete, take a photograph of their completed version and email back to the teacher) by the end of the lesson or, alternatively, they can can correct their answers using the “Link to Lesson … answers”.
Voila! Lesson completed!
